Easing restrictions leads to different shopping plans.

Within the US, a number of states have recently started easing social distancing restrictions and begun allowing stores to reopen. (For the sake of this analysis, “reopening states” include Alabama, Alaska, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, and Wyoming.) Most notably, people in those states say they plan to buy more jewelry, apparel, beauty products, and hardware compared to people in states that are continuing stay-at-home guidelines. People in reopening states also plan to buy fewer office supplies, sporting goods and toys.

More people in the UK expect a mix of remote and in-office work in the future.

Forty-nine percent of survey participants in the UK say they think they will work from home part of the week and in the office part of the week in the future, compared to just 16 percent of Americans. In general, Americans were less sure about what their work lives would look like in the future,as 27 percent said they didn’t know compared to 9 percent of people in the UK.

People plan to continue shopping online in the future.

Forty-two percent of people who have purchased from at least one new website amid the pandemic say they plan to do most or all of their shopping online in the month after restrictions are lifted. Thirty-one percent of those who have not shopped any new websites also plan to continue to mainly shopping online in the month after restrictions are lifted. Overall, this suggests that shopping online may become a new preference. Brands that just saw an influx of first-time shoppers may benefit from reaching out to build those relationships as new habits form.

What are people buying and why?

Some people say they are waiting until after stay-at-home restrictions lift to buy extravagant or expensive items. They mentioned planning to buy items including jewelry, big-ticket electronics, and larger furniture like sofas and beds in the future.

While some people are cancelling all the plans they had for the upcoming summer, others remain hopeful. Some say they don’t think they will be able to go to local community spots like pools. Others are optimistic about getting outside.As one person said “I hope to go to the beach safely.”
